Jeffco residents above 6400 ft are required to complete defensible space for the following building permits:

• New building
• New deck
• Replace an existing deck
• Expanding footprint
• Converting to a short term rental
• New development projects, such as new subdivision plats
• When required by a note on a subdivision plat

Maillett Forestry Pricing

• $400 for properties 1/2 acre or less
• $500 for properties 1/2 acre to 1 acre
• Pricing is dependent on size of property and density of forest
• Price includes initial inspection, tree marking (blue paint), letter to the county on landowners behalf, and final inspection

Important Notes on Jeffco Defensible Space

• Defensible space inspections expire after 3 years
• Defensible space (regardless of the type of permit) is not limited to the area of permit i.e. new deck. Defensible space focuses on structures and extends to the edge of the property.
• Updated regulations will take effect July 2026
